Julia Norton

Julia Norton is a singer, actor and voice coach, with over 25 years experience teaching people how to enjoy a free and healthy voice. Born in the UK, she has been singing her whole life. She has composed music for theatre & circus, music directed, has an award winning album ‘Lullaby Island’, performed jazz and musical theatre, and trained as a voice actor. She was a teaching artist for the San Francisco Opera Guild, has presented at conferences all around the world. In 2018 she won a Voice Arts award for her lead role in Disney’s Star Wars game Jedi Challenges and launched her popular podcast Dark and Twisty Tales. She currently divides her time between acting, teaching, singing and getting up to stuff with her family and noisy terrier.

The biggest thing that was always lacking in my singing lessons was how to care for your instrument. You could have been working on your technique for ages and yet not be able to take care of your voice outside of singing. Having also taken an extended course with Julia, she has an expansive knowledge of not just the act of singing and speaking, but most importantly, how to care for your instrument. Her passion for both the art and science of the voice make her unique and valuable. In fact, even if your interest in vocal health is strictly from a health perspective, I believe that you will benefit from her guidance and knowledge and be able to function with more ease.

I had been preparing for an audition with a talent agency and had utilized 3 different voice acting coaches in the period of a week. I was (am) still pretty new to the world of voice acting and didn't realize the damage that I was doing to my voice. Many of the scripts (that I chose!) required a lot of yelling and/or grittiness. By the time I had my audition my voice was fried. Julia Norton was recommended to me and she just happened to be offering her Free Vocal Warm-ups Course the following week. I was able to get a seat in the class and the experience was life-changing. Not only did I learn the mechanics of the voice, how to take care of those bits and pieces, but it was really really fun! Thank you, Julia, for teaching me (in a fun environment) how to avoid damaging my vocal instrument as well as how to recover from an injury if I push it too far. You're fabulous!

I always do some singing warm-ups in the booth, along with tongue twisters, but I will add this warm-up to my routine starting TODAY! The exercises feel so gentle but focused, I can tell they are activating the areas that need that wake-up. Also, I've never cooled down before, and I will start doing that today, too! Thank you.

I've always thought of vocal warm-ups as running easy scales and arpeggios, OHs and AHs, etc. Julia makes a wonderful point that you need to warm up the muscles AROUND your vocal chords, in your throat, your jaw, your face, you lips so that you can use your instrument to its fullest capability. Thank you for opening my eyes to this!
